U.C. Berkeley team: Promoting responsible AI through shared norms

Problem: How can we prevent over-reliance on AI tools from undermining critical thinking and learning?
Solution: Establish an "AI Student User Code" that promotes transparency, verification, and responsible AI use through shared social norms.
During the May 2026 symposium, representatives from GEN's UC Berkeley team explored the growing challenge of AI dependence in education. As generative AI becomes increasingly integrated into academic work, the team argued that current responses, such as restricting AI use or relying on disciplinary enforcement, fail to address the underlying issue. Instead, they proposed redefining AI as a learning partner rather than a substitute for human thinking, ensuring students continue developing critical reasoning and independent problem-solving skills.
The team's proposal centers on an AI Student User Code, a social contract co-created by students and educators that establishes shared expectations for responsible AI use. Built upon the principles of transparency, verification, and human supremacy, the framework encourages students to disclose AI assistance, validate AI-generated information using primary sources, and retain ownership of final decisions and creative work. The presentation also introduced three "Zones of AI Use," distinguishing productive collaboration with AI from over-reliance and misuse.
To implement the framework, the Berkeley team recommended integrating the Code into school syllabi, creating peer-led AI ethics workshops, and embedding AI usage labels into digital learning platforms. Through their combination of behavioral norms, educational policy, and collaborative governance, the UC Berkeley team demonstrated that fostering responsible AI use through shared accountability can preserve critical thinking while allowing students to benefit from advances in artificial intelligence.
