About ESG
GOAL: Climate change is an existential threat. As activists, we need to be pressing for tangible action by firms in the private sector and governments across the world to do their part. This is why we chose to mobilize students and young professionals to amplify their voices and independently assess the Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) performance of firms and states alike, thus holding them accountable for their actions and pushing for meaningful change.
HOW IT WORKS
We have devised a 2 x 2 framework to monitor to evaluate firms and states:
1) Qualitatively and 2) Quantitatively.
For monitoring states, we rely on the Sustainable and Shared Prosperity Index (SSPI) developed by Professor Clair Brown at UC Berkeley and her students for quantitative evaluations. The SSPI assesses states on policy indicators relevant to our project. Monitoring states qualitatively would involve tracking government policies in areas related to ESG, and writing up short reports.
Firm Evaluations
Monitoring firms qualitatively will involve conducting background research on the chosen company, conducting interviews, writing a report on the interviews, and providing a letter grade based on those factors. Monitoring firms quantitatively will consist of gathering the results from existing sources, such as the EcoVadis Survey, the MSCI Index, and the Climate Disclosure Project (CDP).
